Acadia Healthcare: Bayside Marin Treatment Center Still on Hook for $9 Million Verdict in Patient Death

A California appellate court upheld a more than $9 million verdict against Acadia Healthcare in the death of Rahul Pinto, a patient at its Bayside Marin treatment center for alcohol dependence. Despite worsening withdrawal symptoms, Pinto was housed in a unit requiring use of a steep staircase, and on the day of the incident one of two detox nurses failed to report to work and was not replaced, leaving inadequate supervision. After being given a sedative that increased his fall risk, Pinto left his room unassisted, attempted the stairs, and fell, suffering catastrophic injuries that led to his death months later following multiple surgeries and over $2.3 million in medical costs. The court found that understaffing limited monitoring and response, affirming the jury’s conclusion that Acadia’s negligence was a substantial factor in his death.
