Virginia Psychiatrist David W. Reid Reprimanded for Prescribing Controlled Substances without Examinations--Third Strike
September 11, 2025
On July 11, 2025, the Virginia Medical Board reprimanded Norfolk/Virginia Beach psychiatrist David William Reid.
According to the Board’s Amended Order, Reid violated state statute and regulations “in that despite being disciplined by the Board twice for inappropriate prescribing practices, as reflected in consent orders entered April 22, 2004 and January 7, 2021, he inappropriately prescribed controlled substances to [two individuals] between 2018 and 2022…although by his own admission he lacked a bona fide physician-patient relationship with either of them.”
The document goes to states that Reid prescribed Scheduled drugs to an immediate family member, whom he never examined and for whom he did not keep appropriate records of such prescribing. Two of the drugs he prescribed in combination to this family member carried the potential for serious interactions, including increased risk of seizures. Reid was found to have frequently prescribed to this family member though he characterized it as only “occasionally.”
Regarding the second individual, he also prescribed to this person without conducting examinations or keeping appropriate prescribing records. He prescribed a total of 10 drugs to this person, including several different antidepressants and “did not appropriately monitor which medications [this person] was taking at any particular time [and] concurrently prescribed multiple medications with significant interaction potential, such as serotonin syndrome….”
