North Carolina Medical Board Revokes License of Psychiatrist Patricia Boyer for Sexual Relationship with Patient

On May 23, 2022, the North Carolina Medical Board revoked the license of Charlotte psychiatrist Patricia Boyer.

The Board found that Boyer violated professional standards by having an intimate relationship with a current or former patient. She first started treating the patient (“Patient A”) in late 1999. Patient A reported being in an abusive marriage in addition to experiencing other psychological stressors. Dr. Boyer provided psychotherapy and medication management to Patient A.

After several years of treating Patient A, she and Patient A entered into a consensual relationship and that relationship continued until it ended in 2017. Dr. Boyer reported that she discussed ending her physician-patient relationship with Patient A because of the lack of therapeutic progress. This discussion reportedly took place prior to the intimate relationship.

Over the course of her relationship with Patient A she continued to treat Patient A “off the books,” meaning without medical documentation. This off-the-books care included writing multiple prescriptions for Patient A, including for controlled substances. None of these prescriptions were documented in any patient chart.
