North Carolina Psychiatrist Alfred Kwasi Foluke Suspended for Sexual Relationship with Addicted Patient

On May 20, 2022, the North Carolina Medical Board suspended the license of New Bern, North Carolina psychiatrist Alfred Kwasi Foluke, citing unprofessional conduct, failure to conform to the ethics of the medical profession, and for having a sexual relationship with his patient.

This disciplinary action followed the statement of charges that the Board issued against Dr. Foluke on July 6, 2021, which was based on a complaint that the Board received on January 27, 2021, which alleged that Dr. Foluke had pursued a sexual relationship with a female patient (“Patient A”), whom he had treated for opioid use disorder from March 2020 until February 2021. The complaint also alleged that Dr. Foluke had offered Patient A free medical services and to increase her medication if she would engage in a sexual relationship with him. Further, the complaint alleged that while he was treating Patient A, he also employed her and allowed her to live at the same residence on a property he owned.

Review of Patient A’s medical record revealed that it did not contain evidence of informed consent for treatment or a treatment agreement. Dr. Foluke also failed to appropriately monitor Patient A by failing to act on inappropriate findings, including test results which showed that Patient had tested positive for non-prescribed controlled substances or illicit substances.
