New York State Revokes License of Psychiatrist Arnold Mandelstam; Exploited Patient for Own Gratification

On September 20, 2022, the New York State Department of Health (DoH) revoked the license of New York psychiatrist Arnold Mandelstam, for serious acts of professional misconduct, willfully harassing, abusing or intimidating a patient either physically or verbally; exploiting the psychotherapeutic relationship for his own gratification and to satisfy his own prurient interests; negligence, gross negligence, and failure to maintain patient records.

This action was the result of charges which were brought against him because of his deviation from medical standards while treating patients for worsening depression and anxiety related to childhood sexual abuse. According to the State’s document, Mandelstam made inappropriate sexual remarks, asked inappropriate sexual questions, told the patients intimate details of his personal life with his wife, and made references to his own body and physical condition to the patients not for legitimate medical purposes. During one session, he allegedly put his hand in his pocket and began rubbing his penis. The patient noticed that he had an erection. This was the last session that patient attended.
