Psychology Board Seeks to Revoke License of Beverly Hills Psychologist Alice Berkowitz for Violating Terms of Previous Disciplinary Action

March 15, 2022

On November 2, 2021, the California Board of Psychology brought Accusations and a Petition to Revoke Probation against Beverly Hills psychologist Alice Berkowitz. The cause for her initial discipline included dishonesty; corruption, and fraud; repeated acts of negligence; violation of rules of professional conduct; dishonest, corrupt, or fraudulent acts, for which her license was placed on probation for five years with terms and conditions.

The cause for revoking probation included violations of numerous requirements of probation, including obtaining psychotherapy; obtaining a practice monitor; restriction of her practice area; and others.

From September 17, 2018, through January 4, 2019, she committed gross negligence and dishonest, corrupt and/or fraudulent acts by practicing psychology in a family law matter in violation of the probation condition regarding restriction of her practice area, which specifically prohibited her from practicing in family law, dependency, and probate matters.

On January 4, 2019, the Superior Court granted Dr. Berkowitz’s renewed application for a stay of the Board’s restriction, permitting her to practice in any family law matter on the condition that she disclose to the family law court and each of the parties the existence of her probation and the probationary conditions. The Superior Court’s order stated that she “shall disclose to the family law court and each of the parities to the family law case that she is on probation, and the conditions of her probation or the reason why she is on probation.”

However, Dr. Berkowitz failed to appropriately disclose to the family law court and each of the parties in a family law case that she was on probation, the conditions of her probation, or the reason why she was on probation, in violation of the terms of the stay.

In February 2012, she had a prior disciplinary action brought against her and her license was placed on probation for 5 years for unprofessional conduct as she was convicted of knowingly concealing or failing to disclose facts regarding her continued entitlement to insurance benefits by claiming she did not work or receive income when she did work or receive income.
