Ohio Psychiatrist Karipineni Prasad Gives Up Medical License Following Indictment for Illegal Prescribing

A veteran Valley psychiatrist has given up his license to practice medicine as a grand jury accuses him of illegally prescribing drugs.

According to a document filed with the Ohio Medical Board, 80-year-old Dr. Karipenini Prasad, of Canfield, has voluntarily agreed to a permanent revocation of his medical license.

An indictment handed up by the Mahoning County Grand Jury accused Prasad of making false statements and failing to keep a file on Benzodiazepine prescribed to a patient in 2014 and 2015.

According to the National Institutes of Health, in 2019, 16 percent of overdose deaths involving opioids also involved benzodiazepines, a type of prescription sedative commonly prescribed for anxiety or to help with insomnia

The order signed by Prasad on Friday, states that he is giving up his license instead of going through Medical Board disciplinary procedures.

Prasad acknowledges in the order that he no longer wishes to practice medicine and surgery after having been licensed for more than 40 years.

A summons has been issued for Prasad to appear in court to answer the two counts of illegally processing drug documents, which are felonies.
