Michigan Psychiatrist Faidherbe Ceus Fined by State Board, Placed on Probation for Ignoring Complaints of Pregnant Patient
November 2, 2021
On January 27, 2021, the Michigan Board of Medicine ordered that the license of Kalamazoo psychiatrist Faidherbe Ceus be placed on probation for a period of six months. He was also fined $3,000.
At the time of the allegations, Dr. Ceus was employed at Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital as a psychiatrist and on-call physician. While on call, a patient complained of labor pains and requested to be sent to the hospital as her labor pains had increased. Her primary care physician had left the facility for the day and the nursing staff relayed the message to Dr. Ceus that the patient wanted to go to the hospital. He instructed the facility staff to monitor her closely and call with any changes. Several hours later, with the patient exhibiting signs of labor pains, the staff again contacted Dr. Ceus. No new orders were given. Several hours after that, and another call to Dr. Ceus, which produced no new orders, the patient walked into a nearby bathroom alone and gave birth to her child on a facility toilet.
The counts against him stated that his actions constituted negligence and failure to exercise due care. There was a violation of general duty, consisting of negligence or failure to exercise due care, including negligent delegation to, or supervision of employees or other individuals, whether or not injury resulted.
