Wisconsin reprimands marriage & family therapist David Dropkin for closing offices without notifying patients
December 13, 2012
October 23, 2012, the Marriage & Family Therapist Section of the Wisconsin Marriage & Family Therapy, Professional Counseling and Social Work Examining Board reprimanded marriage & family therapist David I. Dropkin.
The Board’s document states that Dropkin owned and operated Community Options for Recovery & Empowerment (CORE), a psychotherapy clinic in Brown Deer, Wisconsin and that on April 2, 2009, CORE was evicted for failure to pay rent. Dropkin failed to notify CORE’s employees of CORE’s imminent move and, after the eviction, only notified some of the treatment staff. For two weeks following the eviction, Dropkin failed to find a new location for CORE and failed to notify any of CORE’s more than 250 clients that their service would be interrupted. He failed to make referrals to other providers. He received numerous phone calls from clients requesting service but did not contact any of them back.
In a separate case, one of CORE’s clients who discovered they’d closed made numerous telephone and in-person requests for her treatment records from CORE. Her doctor also made written requests but Dropkin failed to respond.
