Wisconsin Psychiatrist John D. Whelan Charged with Federal Controlled Substance Violations

A Fond du Lac (Wisconsin) psychiatrist and nurse are facing federal drug charges for selling prescriptions of controlled substances.

On Tuesday, a federal grand jury indicted psychiatrist John D. Whelan, 74, and licensed nurse Tina Montezon, 58, both of Fond du Lac. They are charged with conspiring to distribute controlled substances outside the course of a professional medical practice and not for legitimate medical purposes, maintaining a drug-involved premises and making false statements to federal agents, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin Matthew D. Krueger.

According to Krueger, Whelan and Montezon prescribed drugs like Buprenorphine, Ritalin, Xanax and Adderall to people out of a house on Clinton Street in Fond du Lac. They charged between $200 and $300 per prescription.

If convicted, Whelan and Montezon could face a maximum of 20 years in prison.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Lake Winnebago Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group investigated this case.
