Universal Health Services: State Halts Admissions to Provo Canyon School for Failure to Call 911
June 2, 2026
Utah regulators have taken emergency action against Provo Canyon School after a violent incident in which one resident was left unconscious and bleeding following an assault by another client. According to state officials, staff did not call 911 or emergency medical services. Instead, they transported the injured youth themselves, resulting in an estimated one-hour delay in treatment. The teen was later diagnosed with a jaw injury and a brain bleed.
In response, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services imposed emergency licensing restrictions on the facility, including a temporary ban on admitting new clients. The school must also retrain staff on emergency response procedures and client supervision while undergoing increased state monitoring.
The incident has renewed scrutiny of Utah’s troubled-teen industry. State Sen. Mike McKell said the severity of the injuries should have prompted an immediate call to EMS and law enforcement. The facility has also faced criticism in the past from Paris Hilton, who has publicly alleged she experienced abuse while attending the school as a teenager and has called for stronger oversight of such programs.
