Universal Health Services: No More Medicaid Reimbursements for Laurel Ridge Treatment Center
May 5, 2026
Federal officials have officially ended Medicare and Medicaid coverage at Laurel Ridge Treatment Center as of April 30, meaning the facility can no longer receive federal reimbursement for newly admitted patients. The action by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services follows findings that the san Antonio-area psychiatric hospital, which is owned by Universal Health Services, failed to meet required health and safety standards.
The decision comes after months of documented concerns about conditions inside the facility, including staffing shortages, unsafe environments, and incidents that put patients at risk. Investigators previously identified issues such as patient access to dangerous items and broad lapses in patient supervision—raising serious questions about safety and quality of care.
Despite the loss of funding, Laurel Ridge leadership says the hospital will remain open and continue treating patients while working to address the deficiencies cited by regulators. Officials say they hope to resolve the issues and regain compliance.
