Trails Carolina Is Closed and Its Former Property Is For Sale

Last month the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services revoked the license of Trails Carolina, an outdoor therapeutic camp where a 12-year-old boy died of asphyxia in February 2024. He had been at the camp less than 24 hours.

There are no pending appeal cases and the Transylvania County Department of Social Services and Vaya Health have been notified, according to Robin Sulfridge, chief of the department’s mental health licensure and certification section, in a letter to Trails Carolina.
