State suspends psychiatrist William B. Lyles over prescribing habits

On May 15, 2013, the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board suspended the license of Wisconsin psychiatry William B. Lyles for 20 days for unprofessional conduct.

The Board also placed limitations on his license. The Board’s document describes three patient cases in which Lyles delegated the prescribing of psychotropic drugs to his business partner, a clinical social worker; failed to take and/or chart an adequate psychiatric history; prescribed without proper evaluation and monitoring and, in one case, continuously prescribed large amounts of Adderall to a patient he’d not seen in his office in approximately 18 months. After that point, he continued to prescribe him Adderall and amphetamines for approximately another year, even after he was aware that the patient had been arrested for running a “meth lab” in his basement.

The limitations placed on his license include a prohibition on prescribing, dispensing or otherwise possessing a controlled substance without a prescription issued to him as a patient; neither can direct or request another to engage in prescribing, dispensing or administering controlled substances. He is also not permitted to engaged in clinical solo practice.
