State medical board reprimands psychiatrist Dayna D. Hughes

November 24, 2010

On September 17, 2010, the South Carolina State Board of Medical Examiners issued a Final Order, reprimanding psychiatrist Dayna D. Hughes for violating a federal, state or local law involving drugs; engaging in habitual or excessive use or abuse of a controlled substance and committing unprofessional conduct.

According to the Board’s Order, Hughes wrote three fraudulent prescriptions for the stimulant drug Adderall, a controlled substance.

The prescriptions were written in the name of a person from her home state of Arkansas, where she had previously lived and practiced, despite not holding a controlled substance registration in the state of South Carolina.

Hughes was arrested in December 2009 by the state Bureau of Drug Control on three counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.
