Psychologist Barry Sugar surrenders license to state following criminal convictions

On May 9, 2012, Barry Sugar, Ph.D., surrendered his license to the California Board of Psychology.
Sugar pled guilty on January 7, 2011 to willful infliction of corporal injury on a spouse and criminal threats and w sentenced to two years prison.
The Board’s document states that on the morning of December 26, 2010, Sugar went out and bought vodka, brought it home and started drinking.
Mid-afternoon of the same day, police were called to a domestic disturbance at Sugar’s residence. They investigated and arrested Sugar and took him into custody.
An emergency protection order was issued, ordering Sugar to stay at least 100 yards from his wife and son, as well as their residence.
Additionally, Sugar was convicted in 2010 of driving under the influence, relative to an incident in which, while drunk, he failed to avoid a collision and crashed into a home, damaging the home and two vehicles in its driveway and then fled the scene in his vehicle, which had lost a front wheel in the collision. He was arrested for hit and run and police recovered three vodka bottles he’d discarded in nearby bushes.
