Psychiatrist with Israeli military sentenced to jail for contact with enemy

January 17, 2008

On January 17, 2008 the Tel-Aviv (Israel) District Court sentenced psychiatrist David Shamir to five years in prison for offering secret information to Iran and the Islamic militant group Hamas, according to court documents.  Shamir was earlier convicted of contact with a foreign agent and possession of information with the intent of endangering state security.  He sent e-mails and faxes to Iranian and Hamas officials offering them classified information, according to police and the indictment against him.  Israeli law forbids contact with Hamas, which is listed as a terrorist group by Israel, the U.S. and Europe.1
