Psychiatrist facing sex assault charges involving nine female patients, waives hearing
July 5, 2012
The psychiatrist who practiced in Monroe and was charged with sexually assaulting female patients waived a hearing, sending his case to a higher court.
Dr. Abdullahi A. Mohamed, 58, who has been fired as a staff physician at Mercy Memorial Hospital, was arraigned Wednesday on 14 additional criminal charges. Although the allegations involve the same man, the court has two separate actions against him.
In the first case, which resulted in charges filed in May, Dr. Mohamed was charged with criminal sexual conduct third- and fourth-degrees in connection with the alleged assault of a 26-year-old patient. She told authorities the incident occurred in the doctor’s office at Outpatient Behavioral Health Center at 700 Stewart Rd., which is where the other assaults also allegedly occurred.
Dr. Mohamed waived the preliminary examination before First District Judge Mark S. Braunlich and the first case now moves to Monroe County Circuit Court. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 31.
On Tuesday, Dr. Mohamed stood before Judge Braunlich on the 14 other charges that were filed by the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office. Those charges were the result of up to eight other female victims who came forward and reported their incidents to Michigan State Police investigators.
Judge Braunlich freed the doctor on a personal recognizance bond after arraigning him on the the charges. A preliminary examination was set for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Dr. Mohamed earlier had posted a $100,000 cash bond on the first set of charges.
He is being represented by Barry A. Resnick of Farmington Hills. Dr. Mohamed also reportedly was fired from his practice in Dearborn, court records show.
