NY State precludes psychiatrist from practice; standard of care not met

On October 15, 2013, the New York State Office for Professional Medical Conduct (OPMC) limited the license of psychiatrist Samson Adegbite, precluding patient contact and any practice of medicine, clinical or otherwise.

According to the Board’s document, Adegbite’s treatment of four patients failed to meet the accepted standards of medical practice. In one instance, he began treating a patient with Depakote without following up by ordering the appropriate bloodwork. He prescribed the same patient Risperidone, Depakote and Adderall without monitoring the health of the patient’s liver and later doubled the patient’s Depakote dosage with no knowledge of the patient’s Depakote blood level or without noting it in the record.

Additionally, he discontinued Risperidone and replaced it with another antipsychotic without documenting the rationale for the change. Lastly, after noting the patient’s lowered white blood count (WBC), he failed to request a hematological consult and/or continue to the monitor the patient WBC.
