Maine psychologist surrenders license for failure to abstain from alcohol

June 3, 2008

TERRY McCANDIES   On June 3, 2008 the Maine Board of Examiners of Psychologists issued a Consent Agreement accepting the surrender of psychologist Terry McCandies’ license to practice due to Ms. McCandies’ failure to abstain from the use of alcohol. On March 11, 2008, the Board issued a formal reprimand on McCandies, based on a complaint it received from the Chief Executive Officer of the mental health center where she was employed, stating that she had practiced psychology in a professional capacity while in an inebriated state. The Board reprimanded her at that time and placed her on two years probation during which she was to remain in treatment with a mental health provider whose recommendations included that McCandies abstain from the use of alcohol. In late April 2008, the Board received another complaint from her employer, stating that “McCandies’ office smelled of alcohol and that she appeared woozy during office hours…but that she denied consuming alcohol during the business day” but “reported that she had consumed alcohol during the preceding night…” 1
