Los Angeles Clinic and Psychiatrist John Faber Settle Wrongful Death Lawsuit
May 15, 2026
The family of late pop singer Aaron Carter has reached a confidential settlement with a Los Angeles psychiatry clinic accused of overprescribing Xanax before his 2022 death. The wrongful death lawsuit alleged that Carter received “excessively high and unreasonably frequent” prescriptions of the anti-anxiety medication despite ongoing substance abuse and mental health struggles.
According to court filings, the settlement resolves claims against Amen Clinics and one of its psychiatrists, John Faber, though the clinic denied wrongdoing and argued Carter’s death was caused by inhaling compressed gas rather than medical negligence. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled that Carter drowned in his bathtub after becoming incapacitated by both difluoroethane and alprazolam, the generic form of Xanax.
The case continues against other defendants, including pharmacies and a dentist. Advocates say the lawsuit highlights ongoing concerns about prescription oversight, accountability in behavioral healthcare, and the dangers vulnerable patients face when addictive medications are prescribed without adequate monitoring.
