Iowa Psychologist John Edgette Suspended Due to Substance Abuse

On January 22, 2019, the Iowa Board of Psychology suspended indefinitely the license of psychologist John Edgette.

The Board’s December 21, 2018 Notice of Hearing and Statement of Charges provides the factual circumstances underlying the suspension:

• On January 26, 2017, Edgette was convicted of operating while under the influence in Jefferson County, IA.
• In September of 2017, he consumed alcohol while at work and was subsequently referred to the state’s Impaired Practitioner Program (IPP).  
• In February 2018, he executed an initial agreement with the Impaired Practitioner Review Committee which required him to abstain from alcohol and to participate in chemical screening.  
• On multiple occasions, he tested positive for alcohol or alcohol metabolites, missed scheduled tests, and missed mandatory check-ins with the chemical screening program.

Edgette was referred back to the Board of Psychology for noncompliance with the IPP. The Board’s Order in the matter requires him to complete a comprehensive substance abuse evaluation and demonstrate 12 continuous months of sobriety, among other things, before the Board will consider restoring his license, which would be placed on probationary status for three years.
