Custody Evaluator Karen Hobbs Loses License for Lying and Lying Some More
April 16, 2018
On November 27, 2017, psychologist Karen Hobbs surrendered her license to the California Board of Psychology ("Board").
The Board's document states that Hobbs in regard to a 2015 divorce-child custody matter filed in Alameda (California) Superior Court, Hobbs provided a sworn declaration, identifying herself as a clinical psychologist "with a specialty in child custody evaluations and mediation" and stated that she had obtained extensive experience in that area between 1990 and 2006.
Hobbs, who represented the mother in the case, went even further, declaring that "with my level of experience in the field of child custody evaluations, and my absolute confidence in the veracity of [my client's] reports, I feel I am in a unique position to offer some of my observations and conclusions to the court."
In the case, Hobbs informed the court of her conclusions and opinions about regarding the father's personality and behaviors, including that he was physically abusive of the mother and the family cat, had misspent community funds, and appeared to meet the criteria for sex addiction, among other things. She recommended that he be required to submit to a psychiatric evaluation, substance abuse evaluation, and more.
The only problem is that Hobbs was not a court-appointed custody evaluator in the matter and had never conducted an interview and/or evaluation of the husband. Rather, she was involved in a business relationship with the mother and had never had more than briefest social contact with the husband.
