Connecticut Psychiatrist Chijioke Egbujo Charged in National Medicaid Fraud Takedown

July 8, 2026

Federal prosecutors have charged Connecticut psychiatrist Chijioke Nnanna Egbujo, 53, with medical assistance fraud and making false claims to Medicaid as part of the U.S. Department of Justice's 2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown—the largest health care fraud enforcement action in U.S. history. Prosecutors allege that while working as a contracted psychiatrist at a state-funded hospital, Egbujo submitted fraudulent Medicaid claims for psychiatric services. The charges are allegations, and Egbujo is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

According to federal authorities, Egbujo is one of four Connecticut residents charged in connection with the nationwide crackdown, which targeted hundreds of defendants accused of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid, and other government health care programs. The 2026 enforcement action resulted in charges against 455 defendants involving more than $6.5 billion in alleged fraud, making it the largest operation of its kind conducted by the Justice Department. Medicaid fraud represented a significant portion of the cases, with authorities describing it as a record-setting year for enforcement.

The case highlights the heightened scrutiny facing licensed medical professionals accused of abusing public health care programs. If convicted, Egbujo could face criminal penalties in addition to potential professional licensing consequences. Federal investigators say the nationwide takedown reflects an ongoing effort to protect taxpayer-funded health care programs and hold providers accountable for alleged fraudulent billing practices.
