California medical board suspends psychiatrist J. Frank James
December 19, 2011
On December 19, 2011, the Medical Board of California issued a summary suspension of the license of psychiatrist J. Frank James (aka James Franklin James, M.D.). This action was based upon disciplinary action taken upon James in the state of North Carolina. In July 2010, the North Carolina Medical Board reprimanded James for failure to comply with his contract with the North Carolina Physicians Health Program (a state rehabilitation program for impaired physicians). James had entered into the program in late 2008, after the North Carolina Board learned that he had retained and personally used benzodiazepines and sleep medications originally prescribed for his patients and family members throughout his years of practice. He surrendered his license but was issued a temporary one in January 2010.
