Bangladesh Psychiatrist Ravendra Kumar Singh Royel Charged with Repeatedly Raping a Patient

A psychiatric specialist has been arrested in Sylhet on Sunday night on charge of raping a patient repeatedly on promise of marrying her.

The arrested was associate professor Ravendra Kumar Singh Royal, psychiatric department head of Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, police said.

Witnesses said that the victim, a college girl, went to the private chamber of doctor Royal at Kajal Shah Area of the city’s Medical Road at around 8:00pm on Sunday and started to shout at the doctor.

She was quoted as saying, ‘You have to marry me right now. Your child is in my womb.’

Being informed, a team of Sylhet Metropolitan Police took both of them to interrogate, SMP additional deputy commissioner Sudip Das said.

He said that the victim alleged during the police interrogation that she has been taking treatment from the psychiatrist since 2018 and at one stage the doctor fell in love with her.

She alleged that the doctor raped her at different times assuring her of marriage, the police officer said.

‘The doctor was arrested on Sunday night after the victim filed a case under the Woman and Children Repression (prevention) Act against him,’ the SMP official said.

Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Mohammed Ali Mahmud told New Age that the arrested doctor was sent in the afternoon to produce before the metropolitan magistrate court seeking its directive against him.
