Australian psychiatrist Gary V. Persley suspended for sexual relationship with patient

February 23, 2009

The Health Practitioners Tribunal of Queensland (Australia) suspended psychiatrist Gary Vincent Persley for three months for “unsatisfactory professional conduct.” According to documents made public by the Medical Board of Queensland, Dr. Persley treated a female patient “for some two years and three months. After his treatment ceased, the parties formed a sexual relationship over some nine years from 1997 to 2006.” The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Code of Ethics prohibits any sexual relationship with a former patient. The record of suspension is to remain on the register for a period of three years. Persley is ordered to pay the Board for the cost of the investigation and hearing and is ordered to not conduct individual psychotherapy with female patients until further order.

Dr Persley is being unfairly, targeted by these allegations. From what I read,he had a relationship with an EXpatient, after she saw him as a patient, so what people do fall in love. My guess is that he ended the relationship and the woman wanted to get back at him.Women do those sort of things, women lacking integrity, and decency. Without the full background story, this smear should not be allowed to be printed in the public arena, those behind this,is clearly out to damage somebody's reputation, it's appaling. Dr Persley crossed my path 3 to 4 years ago. When I was in deep depression, he saved my life and sanity. I miss him very much, since he moved to Brisbane.I have not found an other doctor that comes even near his skill and professionalism, including specialists in other fields of medicin.Should I need assistance again with mental health I would seek him out, and gladly travel to Brisbane for appointments. If people think he not good, is probably becouse he is to intelligent and perceptive to be used by people with alterior motives,

The information in this 16-year-old article has been misleading for 13 years. The issue it discusses was concluded in 2012, and Dr Persley has since practiced and helped all ages and genders. To suggest a court order still prevents him from treating female patients today is dangerously incorrect.

Dr. Persley has been a practising psychiatrist for 45 years in 2025. He has been my therapist for years, and in that time, he has been a dedicated professional.
