Acadia Healthcare: Southwood Psychiatric Hospital Facing Five New Child Sexual Abuse Lawsuits
May 8, 2026
A children’s psychiatric hospital in the Pittsburgh area is facing five new lawsuits alleging sexual and physical abuse of patients, adding to several cases already filed against the facility over the past year. The lawsuits against Southwood Psychiatric Hospital claim children as young as 10 were abused by both staff members and other patients, with attorneys alleging chronic understaffing, inadequate supervision, and unsafe living conditions contributed to the abuse.
According to the complaints, much of the alleged abuse occurred overnight when staffing levels were especially low. One lawsuit describes a staff member allegedly assaulting a child patient, while another claims guardians were prevented from seeing their child after police alerted them to abuse allegations. Attorneys representing the families say the cases point to a systemic failure to protect vulnerable youth receiving psychiatric care.
Hospital representatives declined to comment on the litigation, saying any claims would be addressed through the legal process. Lawyers for the plaintiffs say they expect additional victims to come forward and are calling for reforms including increased staffing, stronger background checks, better supervision, and safer patient housing arrangements.
