A marriage made in hell? One troubled psychiatric hospital chain buys purchases another
May 17, 2010
The Wall Street Journal announced that Universal Health Services (UHS), a Pennsylvania-based private hospital corporation which operates, among all its properties, more than 100 psychiatric facilities in the U.S., will purchase Tennessee-based Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI), the largest operator of inpatient psychiatric facilties.
Both UHS and PSI have a history of patient abuses. UHS in fact has the singular distinction of ten patient deaths or suicides in 13 years, including three teenagers between 2005 and 2007. One of these teen deaths was ruled a homicide, perpetrated by a Universal employee.
