Ontario Psychiatrist Ravi Shenava Guilty of Assault, Surrenders Medical License

September 27, 2018

All charges against a Windsor psychiatrist accused of sexual assaulting patients have been dealt with, his lawyer says, following a court appearance this week in which the doctor pleaded guilty to three simple assaults and paid $3,900 in fines.

Dr. Ravishankar Thimmangur Shenava — also known as Ravi Shenava — has also surrendered his Ontario medical licence, lawyer David Humphrey said. Sheneva was 67 last December when he was found not guilty of five counts of sexual assault and one count of extortion involving a former female patient.

There were other former patients claiming they were sexually assaulted by the Shenava, said Humphrey. “His position was he never sexually assaulted or sexually abused any (patients).”

The lawyer said some charges of sexual assault were withdrawn by prosecutors and on Thursday in a Windsor courtroom Shenava pleaded not guilty to three outstanding counts of sexual assault and guilty to the “lesser and included offence of simple assault,” according to Humphrey, referring to three charges.

He said the Crown agreed to not pursue the sexual assault charges to which Shenava had pleaded not guilty to. The penalty for the assault convictions were three $1,000 fines totalling $3,000 and three $300 victim surcharges totalling $900, he said.
