Psychiatrist Ovais Badat Gave Woman Patient Champagne & Cocaine in Hotel Room

Bristol, UK - One of the UK’s top Consultant Psychiatrists Ovais Badat faces jail term after being convicted of supplying a Class A drug. Badat supplyed cocaine and maked out false prescriptions to get his hands on more substances. An investigation established Badat had acquired drugs by writing fake prescriptions in the name of “Ebrahim Fulat”, for whom there was no record. CCTV showed the person collecting those prescription drugs was Badat himself.

 

In January 2015 Badat called Miss Lister (a patient), told her about his working for a charity and said that they would be providing him with hotel accommodation in Bristol that evening. Miss Lister offered to do administration work for him. Kerry Barker, prosecuting, said: “He invited her to meet him there.” Miss Lister arrived at the hotel room but no work was done. Mr Barker said: “He provided from his bag bottles of champagne and a tin entitled ‘Man Tin’, in which there was a large lump of cocaine and various pills.

 

“They joked about Laura being a patient of the clinic. They drank the champagne.” The court heard Miss Lister said she could not take the cocaine because she developed an allergic reaction to it, having been a drug user. But he told her she could not be allergic to pure cocaine and the allergic reaction must have been a cutting agent. After staying overnight, Miss Lister was ill, hungover and vomiting. She left at 10am and Badat gave her a wrap of cocaine and some blue ADHD pills before taking her home.

 

It was discovered Badat was a regular cocaine user who took it in a friend’s presence, the court heard. The court heard Miss Lister relapsed into drug use and, on reflection, became concerned about Badat’s behaviour that night. When Miss Lister was contacted by a manager at the ADHD service clinic she told them what happened and police were called in.

 

After a trial at Bristol Crown Court Badat was convicted of supplying cocaine, making articles for use in frauds, fraud and possessing Class B drug Ketamine.
