Allegations of Psychiatrist Dr. Peter Steiner Having Overprescribed Opioids

June 28, 2018

The nation's largest crackdown on health care fraud netted several Louisville, Kentucky medical practitioners, including psychiatrist Peter Steiner, whom, along with Kentuckiana Mental Health Associates, is facing 26 federal charges. The indictment alleges he overprescribed drugs, specifically opioids.

"There's financial cost to every person who pays for health care benefits, to every business that pays higher insurance costs and to every taxpayer who funds Medicare ... The FBI used every tool we have to ensure our health care dollars are used appropriately and not to line the pockets of criminals," FBI Special Agent in Charge Amy Hess said.

Steiner's medical license is suspended, and two of his three practices have closed.
