Ohio mental health counselor DeDe Denbow disciplined for failure to obtain consent

July 19, 2012

On January 11, 2012, the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker & Marriage and Family Therapist Board issued a Consent Agreement on professional clinical counselor DeDe Denbow, which places her under weekly face-to-face practice monitoring for six months with a Board-approved supervisor, at her own expense.

According to the Board’s document, Denbow wrote a letter dated July 19, 2010, “To Whom It May Concern,” describing a joint counseling session between a minor client and her alleged sexual abuser. Denbow asked the minor to confront her alleged abuser, who denied the abuse.

Denbow did not have written consent from the minor’s guardian to conduct the joint session and such a session fell outside the scope of practice for a minor client with sexual abuse and trauma issues whose alleged abuser denied the abuse.
