Vermont Psychiatrist Amalia Lee Reprimanded Over Sub-Standard Treatment of Patient Who Died

March 30, 2022

On February 26, 2021, the Vermont Board of Medical Practice ordered that Brattleboro psychiatrist Amalia Lee be reprimanded for unprofessional conduct.

The Board received a complaint alleging that Dr. Lee provided substandard medical treatment to a patient who died of a myocardial infarction on May 28, 2016. Lee provided pharmacotherapy to the patient from September 23, 2013 through May 5, 2015 while she was employed at Grace Cottage Hospital. She had taken over the treatment of the patient from the patient’s prior psychiatrist, who had prescribed an excessively high dose of Adderall. Lee continued to prescribe Adderall at the high dose.

The Board’s investigation determined that the overall quality of Dr. Lee’s documentation regarding communication with colleagues regarding her treatment of the patient was poor in that records were sparse and lacked important elements and details required by the standard of care regarding those communications.

It was found that Dr. Lee’s substandard medical record keeping constituted unprofessional conduct.
